Train toys are those toys which embody real passenger or freight trains in their design and in the fact that many, although not all, travel on tracks. Unlike model trains which are built to scale with complex details and engines, most toy trains are much simpler, much less expensive and their mobility often relies on manual pulling or pushing, or they are operated by batteries or clockworks.

The first toy trains were introduced in 1891 by a toy manufacturer named Marklin who was based in Leipzig, Germany. At that time, Marklin measured their O gauges (O scales) as the distances between the centers of the two outer rails rather than measuring the distance between the outer rails themselves. However, today’s standards for toy trains also include other scales and among the most popular are the S scales, the HO scales, N scales, the Z scales and the T scales.
